CALL FOR PAPERS

The Hypothèses & [Annexes] team is pleased to invite you to participate in its call for papers for the 2026-2027 symposia calendar year !

Application deadline WEDNESDAY MAY 13TH, 2026 at midnight

We invite proposals for the upcoming conference and podcast season reflecting upon an artistic corpus without any thematic or methodological restrictions. We accept proposals in French or English. Applications will be accepted from postdoctoral researchers, doctoral students, and Master’s candidates. Additionally, applications will be accepted from graduates who have submitted their dissertations within the last academic year from the call for papers.

Applications must include the following elements:

Your abstract for a 20 minute presentation (about 2000 characters, including spaces), the title of your lecture (100 characters maximum, including spaces), and your level of study.

For the purposes of blind selection: DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME OR PERSONAL INFORMATION on your proposal page.
One to three images (in JPEG format) illustrating the subject of your lecture, accompanied by their related caption (Artist, Title, Year, provenance where necessary, and the image’s or photography’s copyright)..

This is not a selection criteria: In the event that your proposal is selected, one of the images will be used to promote the evening of your conference. Please make sure to have a high-resolution file of the images for this purpose. (As the images are distributed in an academic context, you can take advantage of the fair use of copyright law).

Papers will be evaluated anonymously by an impartial committee composed of representatives from Montreal universities. Note that the choices are based on the originality and rigor of the proposals, but also the relevance of themes in relation to an annual program.

About Hypotheses

Hypothèses is a lecture series focused on art history and museum studies, organized for graduate students from Montreal universities, with the aim of stimulating and disseminating emerging research in the discipline. The series acts as a platform to support debates and foster dialogues between researchers.

In addition, Hypothèses proposes to contribute to the decompartmentalization of the academic sphere, a project jointly carried out by its podcast series [Annexes] (look out for our call for participants in the fall!).

The 2026-2027 lecture series will follow the usual format of two papers per session followed by a question and discussion period and then a social time. The evenings will be held one Wednesday per month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in a Montreal cultural institution.

Members will be responsible for organizing six annual conferences and collectively coordinating a variety of tasks, including: the selection and programming of conferences and the podcast [Annexes], funding applications and follow-up, email communications, social media management, logistics during conferences, and the renewal of the partnership with the host venue (La Guilde). A commitment over two consecutive years is desirable, though not required.
